I woke this morning to find a package on the steps from Amazon Fulfillment. Inside was a book:
Understanding Cryptography: A Textbook for Students and Beginners
The note said "A Gift from Tom L., ESQ" with the little box for your personalized message saying only: Enjoy your gift.
Typical of my cousin to give a gift in a way that aligns with the nature of the gift itself. Or to select a book on cryptography as a present, out of the blue, for nothing.
I am sixteen pages into Understanding Cryptography and I understand, shamefully, very little of what I am reading. I cheated prodigiously since I was sixteen years old on math, and left that part of my brain to deteriorate along with my attention. I did get good grades, breaking my share of ciphers through social engineering.
